What is a jockey wheel for trailers and what is it used for?

Although the jockey wheel is only a small part of the trailer, it is undoubtedly a crucial element for safety, comfort, and ease of use. Nevertheless, we often find that many users are unsure which jockey wheel is best suited to their trailer. So, it's time to clarify things a little.

In this blog, we compare different types of jockey wheels, and explain the most important differences, when you should choose which type, and what you can find in EDUARD's range.

1. What is the purpose of a jockey wheel?

A jockey wheel is a wheel that is attached to the front of the trailer by means of a rod. It serves as a support and makes it easier to maneuver when stationary. On single-axle trailers, it ensures that the ball coupling does not have to be placed on the ground.

Note: The jockey wheel may only be used when stationary and therefore has no function while driving.

Does a trailer need a jockey wheel?

A jockey wheel is not mandatory nor strictly necessary. But in most cases, it is very practical.

2. What are the different types of jockey wheels available?

  • Jockey wheel with pneumatic tire
Ideal on soft surfaces such as grass or sand, as the wheel sinks less quickly due to the larger contact area.
  • Jockey wheel with solid rubber wheel (plastic or rubber)
Perfect for hard surfaces such as concrete or asphalt and durable.

If we compare solid rubber versus pneumatic jockey wheels:
A solid rubber jockey wheel cannot burst. However, with a pneumatic tire, there’s always a chance of this happening.

3. How to choose a jockey wheel?

The suitability of a jockey wheel depends on your trailer and its use.

  • Steel rim with rubber or plastic wheel
Particularly robust and wear-resistant, making it the right choice for heavier trailers (from approx. 3,500 kg).

  • Plastic rim/wheel
Lightweight, which is practical for caravans or small trailers, but less robust.

Are all jockey wheels the same?

There are different types of jockey wheels on the market.

  • Adjustable:
This jockey wheel with clamp is usually mounted on the drawbar. It is height-adjustable with an extendable rod and has a crank.
  • Retractable:
This jockey wheel is usually mounted on the overrun brake bracket or ball coupling, which means that the construction is firmly attached to the trailer. This jockey wheel is operated using only the crank, which you use to fold the wheel up at the end of the stroke.

4. What capacity jockey wheel do I need?

Jockey wheels have different load capacities, often between 150 and 500 kg static.

  • An adjustable jockey wheel can usually carry a static load of 150 kg (lower ball pressure) and is therefore often used on unbraked or lighter trailers.
  • A retractable jockey wheel can usually bear a static load of 250 to 500 kg (higher ball pressure load) and is therefore more commonly used on braked, heavier trailers.

Note: It is important that this corresponds to the weight of the trailer.

5. Quality & workmanship

  • Bearings run more smoothly and last longer than bushings.
  • Thicker tubes offer more stability.
  • For an adjustable jockey wheel, also make sure that the tube diameter is correct so that the jockey wheel fits optimally into the clamp.

How do I know what size jockey wheel I need?

CHOOSING A JOCKEY WHEEL

The standard support wheel by KNOTT is sufficient for lighter loads. For heavier loads, the retractable support wheel or the 500 kg AL-KO support wheel with corresponding reinforcement strips offer significant added value in terms of stability and durability.
